Why I Spent 8 Hours in a Crawlspace Last Monday

Okay, snarky title aside, this is really going to be about the cool stuff I get to do in my job and the neat people I meet.

A few weeks ago I was hired by the good folks over at Crawl Space Cleaning Pros to do photo/video of a crawl space renovation. If you read this blog, you get the idea that I normally just work with families, couples, and kiddos, right? Well, this is the other half of what I do

The day started off by meeting one of CSCP's reps on location. We found the crawlspace, joined the cleaning crew, and went to work shooting photo and video of the renovation. Surprisingly, this is one of the largest crawlspaces the company has ever seen, hence why they brought me out to document it. They tore out the old, installed the new, sealed cracks, and cleaned everything up.

Now, the neat part of all this was during the short break the crew took early in the morning. We sat and discussed family, where they came from, how they got into this line of work, etc. Not only did I get to see these guys work, I got to hear about their lives. Turns out that they were hired onto CSCP as a group, coming over from another company. The owner had provided a better opportunity and safer work environment, which they all jumped on.

Quick side note: Yes, they were gracious enough to provide me with a mask. Fiberglass can be some nasty stuff. I think I had to shower three times to get it all off!

Honestly, these were some of the most tireless, hardworking guys I've ever met. Knowing the background and motivation behind the people I work with helps bring a human element to what I do, and it's one of the most enjoyable parts of the job for me. The more I do this, the less alien other people and other jobs become to me. It's one of the intangible benefits of this job—the ability to breed empathy.

Whether you're a local business or not, I hope you enjoy this sample of photos (and a video!).
