Sunset Lighting and Engaging Photos

There's an old Hank Williams song that I really dig called "I Saw the Light." It's a gospel song from the late '40s with a real upbeat, cheerful tune and fun lyrics. The refrain goes:

I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I'm so happy, no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light!

After this latest set of engagement photos, these lyrics have been stuck in my head. It used to be that we rarely shot portraits at sunset. Without controlled lighting, you miss some of its best opportunities and have to deal with some of its greatest difficulties. Well, we recently invested in a pair of large soft boxes designed to work in conjunction with our battery-powered, remote-triggered flashes. (For those of you not so into the technical, we got gear to make the camera flash look softer and more natural.)

Ho-lee MACKEREL, the results we got were incredible. I have completely changed my mind about shooting at sunset. I'd spend a month out in this weather shooting sunset photos if I could. Folks, I saw the light.

Chris & Natalie's photos were taken out at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, WA. Since Chris is from the Kansas countryside, they wanted a farm feel to their photos. The simple background and beautiful sunset lighting made this couple's love for each other shine in every photo. We couldn't have been happier with their session, and we're excited to see them again for their wedding in September.
