Ryan & Kesslan's Colorfully Nerdy Wedding

We love the variety of individuals we come across in our line of work. However, there’s something special about working with a couple who speak the same language as we do—the language of nerds, that is.

Meet Ryan and Kesslan. When we did their engagement photos a little over a year ago, we discovered that we shared a lot of interests. After talking for the last hour of the session about Pokémon and Star Wars and other nerdy topics, I ended up creating this for their engagement photos:

Needless to say, we were thrilled to hear that they wanted us to shoot their wedding in August 2013.

Ryan and Kesslan’s wedding was one of the most unusual weddings we’ve shot for a few reasons.

  • They didn’t have one or two wedding colors—they had a rainbow theme. I honestly didn’t think they could pull it off, but they coordinated the colors so well that it looked classy and beautiful.
  • Ryan and Kesslan’s family and friends made cakes the days before the wedding, and from that collection the couple decided which would be their cutting cake. (You’ll have to see all the photos to see which one they chose!)
  • You can play a game of nerdy I Spy with their photos. Hint: Look for Zelda, Mario, Pokémon, and Dr. Who.
  • The ceremony itself was not in the typical format. It started with two groomsmen singing “God Blessed the Broken Road.” But after the applause for the song died down, the Owl City song “When Can I See You Again?” started, and the bridal party performed a choreographed dance down the aisle.

Even though the bridal party pulled the day off perfectly, there was so much going on around the guests’ tables that it was extremely difficult to capture everything at once. However, we ended up with a well-rounded story of their crazy, fun wedding day. Enjoy!
