Ikman's Fall Senior Photos in the Arboretum (or) How to Prepare for Your Senior Photos

Howdy folks!

Last week we had the pleasure of taking Ikman's senior photos.  It was our first chance to shoot over at the Washington State Arboretum, and I gotta say, the colors were all gorgeous!

Before we get to the photos, I want to point out that Ikman did an excellent job preparing for her session. Here's a list of just some of the things she did right.

  1. She asked lots of question. Asking us lots of questions will help flesh out ideas and make sure we're all on the same page. She asked about packages, pricing, tax, location, outfits, and even the print release. She chose to work with us after carefully gathering all the details.
  2. She chose the two-hour session. So far, our experience in working with seniors has shown us that we need at *least* two hours to get the kind of quality and variety most seniors want. While the one-hour session has worked and will continue to work, the two-hour sessions tend to be more relaxed, allowing for a greater focus on creativity and more equipment set-up. Working under a very tight time limit will not help if you're trying to fit in multiple outfits and locations. Ikman realized that two hours would be best for what she wanted.
  3. She brought three outfits. The two-hour session allows for multiple outfits. Three is an excellent number for outfits, in that it allows about 35 minutes per set of clothes. Not only did we get a good amount of time with each look, we ended up with a wide variety. We were able to range from a contemporary, casual look to a traditional sari. While you're not required to do three, give some thought to how much time each of your outfits will require.
  4. She researched her location. Ikman came into this knowing that she wanted to capture the colors of autumn. While we did discuss different locations, she settled on the Washington State Arboretum after looking through photos online.
  5. Most importantly, she was engaged and involved. This is probably the biggest thing Ikman did that helped her senior session turn out so well. She was involved on the creative level, communicating ideas and tossing out suggestions. While you can certainly rely on us as professionals to compose and create, having a subject who's invested in the final product makes a big difference. Not only will the session better reflect your interests and personality, the whole process will be more fun!
