John & Uine: How to Use a Creative Engagement Photo Location

December 04, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

John and Uine (pronounced Winnie) wanted something extra special for their engagement photos. They met in the lounge of a bowling alley in Bellevue. He introduced himself to her, and, well, the rest is history. So for their engagement photos they wanted to recapture that night by going back to the lounge. The dim lighting offered unique challenges, but in the end we were very excited with what we got.

From there we went to Volunteer Park to get some more traditional outdoor engagement photos. Uine had shown us several photos on her phone which she’d found and wanted to try, and we had fun attempting them all. John and Uine brought props to help, including red balloons and a flag from Uine’s home country of Brazil. We still were shooting even as the sun sank behind Seattle’s buildings.

Do you like John and Uine’s creative lounge photos? Is there a special place you’d like your engagement or family photos taken? We LOVE exploring new places, so please offer your ideas! Here are a couple things to bear in mind first:

#1. Ask permission. If it’s a restaurant, bowling alley, church, or any other private property, ask for permission to use their space well in advance. A lot of people are understanding and will have no problem with you taking photos, as long as they know what’s going on.

#2. Consider time. It takes longer for us to set up for indoor shoots, which cuts into the session time. You may want to purchase an additional hour for your session if you have a lot of ideas you’d like to try. Let us know what you want when scheduling your session, and we’ll be honest about how much time it should take.

#3. Have a back-up plan. It’s always safest to have a back-up location in case of weather, a crowded venue, or some other unforeseen issue. When planning your session, pick two or three locations that aren’t too far apart and list them in order of importance. Share your list and we’ll be happy to work with it!
