Texture & Personality: Brandon's Senior Photos

June 20, 2014  •  1 Comment

Have you ever looked at some of the differences between really good senior photos for guys and for gals? There's differences in posing, color selection, themes, styles, all sorts of things. But there's one aspect in particular that I enjoy getting to bring out a lot when I'm working with a the high school senior guys.

Texture.

Now, this isn't a hard and fast rule. You may remember some very textured martial arts photos we did at the end of Kaitlin's senior portrait session. But with guys, texture tends to play more of a role. It's useful for emphasizing certain aspects of personality, and tends to look better on guys.

And I LOVE it. One of the fun parts of portraits is bringing out the character of the environment as well as the human subject. Areas like downtown Tacoma are filled with reflections, texture, hard lines, and a beautiful variety of urban environments. Pulling out the character of an area is a fantastic way of showing the character of your subject, and we got to take a good crack at that with Brandon, our third and last 2015 senior representative.

We started off over at the University of Puget Sound after one of Brandon's concerts.

You can see how we spent time playing with the light (as well as a few flashes), the natural color inside the music hall, and the classical feel associated with piano.

Next, we went over to downtown Tacoma. We chose a few locations over by the Museum of Glass and back near UW Tacoma. The whole environment could be describe as "urban," but you'll see that some big differences exist between clear urban and back-alley urban.

It was a blast working with Brandon to create senior photos that really captured him and his friendly, laid-back personality. Are you interested in doing the same with your senior? Or are you graduating soon and now looking for your own unique photos? Take a look at our senior packages and shoot us an e-mail. We'd love to hear from you and plan out his or her session!
