Planning Your Indoor Photoshoot

December 07, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

We’ve mentioned before that it’s a good idea to have an indoor location for your photo shoot, whether as a first choice or a back-up in case of rain. This location could be a church or school you’re a part of, a favorite coffee shop, a bowling alley, or even your own house. But before you go crazy with your favorite Pinterest ideas, take a look at our list of tips for using indoor locations.

Tips for Using Indoor Locations:

  • Always get permission to take photos. Most storeowners are more than happy to let you use their space, but we will not shoot there without permission.
  • Ask about if there are any restrictions on photography in general (for example, museums often won’t allow flash). Let us know as it may affect our plans.
  • Check for entrance fees or even photography fees. If there are any, you may be asked to cover them as part of your photography package.
  • Pick a place that’s meaningful for you. If you don’t have kids, a children’s museum probably isn’t the best pick, but the café where you and your loved one met would be great.
  • Allow extra time for set-up. It usually takes us 5-10 minutes to get our lighting equipment up and ready, so take that into consideration when deciding how long a session you’ll need.
  • If you’re afraid of using your house, don’t be. Chances are your house isn’t too small (we’ve worked in apartments before), and you only need to focus on cleaning the room where the photos will be taken. Not so bad, huh?

If you’re still intimidated by the idea of an indoor photo shoot, take a look at these photos as examples of what we’ve done recently. As you look, think of what places would work best for your shoot and how you’d prepare.
